Step-by-Step Guide: How to Qualify

Before applying, make sure you:

 

• Are at least 21 years old
• Have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years
• Can pass a criminal record (DBS) check

You’ll need to:

 

• Get a criminal record check
• Register online with the DVSA to begin the ADI qualification process

Part 1 – Theory Test
Multiple-choice questions and hazard perception

 

Part 2 – Driving Ability Test
A practical driving test to assess your own driving skill

 

Part 3 – Instructional Ability Test
A practical assessment of your teaching skills with a real learner or examiner role-playing

After passing Part 2, you can apply for a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) Licence. This allows you to give paid lessons while preparing for Part 3—gaining valuable teaching experience.

Pass Part 3 and you’ll be added to the official DVSA Approved Driving Instructor Register. You can then legally start teaching learners.
