Becoming a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a rewarding career choice that gives you the chance to teach essential life skills while enjoying job flexibility and independence. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:
1. Meet the Basic Requirements
Before applying, you must:
•Be at least 21 years old
•Have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years
•Pass a criminal record (DBS) check
2. Apply to Become an ADI
Start by applying with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). You’ll need to:
•Complete a criminal record check (DBS)
•Register with the DVSA to begin your instructor qualification process
3. Pass the Three ADI Qualification Tests
To become an approved instructor, you must pass all three parts of the ADI exam:
• Part 1: Theory Test – Includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception
• Part 2: Driving Ability Test – A practical driving test that assesses your personal driving skills
• Part 3: Instructional Ability Test – Evaluates your ability to teach and coach learner drivers
4. Get a Trainee Licence (Optional)
Once you pass Part 2, you can apply for a PDI (Potential Driving Instructor) licence which allows you to teach learners while preparing for Part 3. This gives you valuable real-world experience.
5. Join the ADI Register
After passing all three tests, you can officially join the DVSA ADI Register and start teaching as a fully qualified instructor.
