Waqar is a legendary-level driving instructor 🏆. I started driving with him in November 2025. I was initially nervous before the first lesson as I hadn't driven in two years. However Waqar was super friendly and his clear instructions helped me gain my confidence back. Every lesson thereafter was smooth, I quickly gained the experience and confidence needed and by feb/march 2026 I felt fully ready. I secured a test date for June 2026 and passed my test first try! I really really recommend Waqar. In addition to being a great instructor, he is very fun to talk to and has a very kind heart. You'll always leave the lesson with a smile!![]()

Just passed my test on automatic and I owe it all to Junaid! He’s such a legend—super chill, patient, and made the whole process way less stressful. He knows all the ‘Morden’ test routes inside out and really helped me nail the tricky parts. If you're looking for an instructor who’s easy to get along with and gets results, Junaid is your guy. Thanks again!
What Are Manual Driving Lessons?
In a manual lesson you learn to drive a car whose gears you select by hand. Your left foot works the clutch, your left hand moves the gear stick, and together they decide how smoothly the car moves away. In Wandsworth that skill gets tested early, because the one-way system asks you to choose a lane, a gear and a signal within a few seconds. A manual pass licenses you for both manual and automatic cars.
Should You Learn Manual or Automatic in Wandsworth?
Manual is the safer bet if you are not sure what you will drive in five years. It leaves your licence unrestricted. An automatic pass adds code 78, and removing it later means sitting the practical test again in a manual car.
- Car clubs and borrowed cars: Many Wandsworth households share cars or use car clubs. A manual licence means you can drive whatever is available.
- Getting out of London: The A3 at West Hill and the A205 take you towards Surrey and the M25, where hire cars and vans are frequently manual.
- Hills and junctions build skill: West Hill, East Hill and the gyratory give a manual learner plenty of practice in one short lesson.
- Pick automatic if: you know you will only drive an electric or automatic car, or the gyratory feels like too much on top of a clutch. Automatic usually gets you to test standard sooner. See our automatic driving lessons.
Manual vs Automatic Driving Lessons in Wandsworth Compared
Not sure which to book? Manual lessons give you a licence for any car, while automatic lessons are usually quicker but limit you to automatics. The driving test itself is the same either way. Here is how the two compare for Wandsworth learners.
| Factor | Manual lessons | Automatic lessons |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Unrestricted | Code 78, automatics only |
| Your job behind the wheel | Clutch, gears, steering, speed | Steering and speed |
| On the one-way system | More to coordinate at first | Simpler at first |
| Typical hours to pass | Around 45 (DVSA average) | Usually fewer |
| Test format and marking | Identical | |
| Best choice for | Learners who want every car available to them | Learners settled on automatic or electric |
Manual and automatic lessons cost the same with Kudos Driving School.

What Happens on Your First Manual Lesson in Wandsworth?
The first lesson never goes near the one-way system. You spend it on quiet roads near Wandsworth Common getting to know the car, and nobody is grading you. Bring your provisional licence and any glasses you drive in.
- Paperwork and eyesight: A quick look at your provisional licence and a number-plate check from 20 metres.
- A short drive out: Your instructor drives to a quiet residential street, such as the roads around Sispara Gardens or the grid near Wandsworth Common.
- Know the car: Seat, mirrors, steering wheel, then the three pedals and the gear pattern, all with the car parked.
- First pull-away: You find the biting point, move off a few metres and stop. Then again, until it feels smooth.
- Second gear: On a straight, quiet stretch you change up for the first time.
- Plan: You leave with a note of what you covered, what comes next and a first idea of how many hours you will need.

How Does Kudos Support Nervous Manual Learners in Wandsworth?
For nervous learners in Wandsworth, the problem is usually the one-way system: lots of lanes, lots of signs and little time to decide. Kudos does not take you there until pulling away, stopping and changing gear feel routine, and then introduces it one section at a time.
- Quiet streets first: The roads around Wandsworth Common come before anything busy.
- Gyratory in pieces: One section of the one-way system at a time, starting at off-peak hours.
- Instructor drives it first: You can watch a full lap from the passenger seat before you drive it.
- Stall routine: Handbrake, neutral, restart, bite, go. Rehearsed until a stall is a non-event.
- You set the pace: Nothing new until you say the last thing feels safe.
- Dual controls: Your instructor can always help with the brake or clutch.

Is the one-way system hard in a manual car?
It is the hardest part of learning here, but manageable. The trick is finishing your gear change before you change lane. Kudos introduces it one section at a time, after you can pull away and change gear without thinking.
Will the one-way system be on my driving test?
Very unlikely. Wandsworth has no test centre, and Morden, Mitcham and Tolworth are all several miles away. You learn it because you will drive it every day after passing.
Which test centre should Wandsworth learners use?
GOV.UK lists Morden and Mitcham first for SW18. Tolworth had the highest pass rate (53.6%) and shortest wait (10.3 weeks) of the three in 2025/26. Your instructor will help you pick.
How many manual lessons will I need?
Around 45 hours on the DVSA average for a beginner, plus about 22 hours of private practice. If you have driven before, 15 to 20 hours may be enough.
Can I learn manual if I already have an automatic licence?
Yes. Your automatic licence counts as a provisional for manual cars, so you can start straight away without another theory test.
Can my instructor book my test?
No. Since 12 May 2026 only learners can book, change or cancel car tests on GOV.UK.
Do I need a theory pass before lessons?
No. A provisional licence is enough to start. You need the theory pass before booking the practical test.
Can lessons start at a station?
Yes. Kudos can pick up from Wandsworth Town, Earlsfield or Southfields station, as well as from home or work.
